Muslim Family Law Ordinance, 1961 (Ordinance No. 8 of 1961)

Ordinance made to implement certain recommendations of marriage and family law commission.

Because, marriage and family law commission needs to be implemented and expedient. Therefore, by the declaration of 7 October 1958, the President gave the power to the President, the following Ordinance:

1. Short title, limit, application and enforcement time (Short title, extent, application and commencement):

This ordinance will be called 'Muslim Family Law Ordinance' in 1961.

It is applicable to all Muslim citizens of Bangladesh, wherever and wherever it may be.

It will be effective from the date on which the government determines the date through notification in the official gazette.

(Note that this ordinance has been enforced on July 15, 1961)

2. Definitions: In this Ordinance, if there is not anything contrary to content or context-

(A) "arbitration council" means the council formed by the Chairman and a representative of each of the respective parties referred to in this ordinance. Provided that if a party fails to nominate the parties within the stipulated time, the council formed without the same representative will be the arbitral council.

(B) Chairman (Chairman) means-

Chairman of the Union Parishad;
The chairman of the municipality;
Mayor or administrator of municipal corporation;

The person nominated by the government to perform the functions of the chairman according to this Ordinance in the cantonment area;
